Good to read another Susan Carlton story. It reflected all the tough times people had during the civil war. It also revealed the courage people have inside to keep living the life that God has given to each of us to be a happy.
I'm sorry about the 3-stars. I've read this author before and so enjoyed the books. Somehow, this one did not meet her excellent standards. The writing was stilted sort of like reading a diary of teenage lives. However, I will say that the story-line itself was good and I enjoyed the events of the book. Ben and Caroline were friends on neighboring farms until Ben left with his family to obtain land in Oregon. Years passed, marriages occurred, children were born and then the two long ago friends became reacquainted through the mail. I loved the interaction of family life of all the grandparents, parents and children. I'm not going to give up on this author as I've read other books by her that were great.
Ben Palmer his parents and two brothers left Ohio for Oregon when he was fifteen years old. Caroline Stevens missed him on the check when they parted she saw the wagons pull away she asked Ben to stay and live with her family, she was going to kiss Ben very much. Years past and Ben married Jenny and she married Philip. Ben and Jenny had a,daughter Becky and when she was about a year old Jenny died. Philip was a captain in the army and after a short time home on leave he was killed in battle. Caroline was now pregnant and WIDOWED. Years go by and her mother who has always kept in touch with Ben's mother tells her to write to Ben and she does. You will enjoy this story of love and these families.
